That was I

That was I

By: Natalie Barrett

In Hordville, Nebraska – –

I’m the girl sitting next to her grandpa,

hoping one day to be just like him.

I’m the girl throwing mud at my sisters,

taking an icy hose blast, at the house.

I’m the girl learning to drive these roads,

watching the cloud of dust behind us.

I’m the kid on the patio with the cats,

taming the stray cat, having a pet.

The farm is where I go to escape my crazy life,

Yes, that was I.

Omaha, Nebraska – –

I’m the kid sitting in her sister’s hospital bed,

Happy just to be with her sister for a couple hours.

I’m the girl silently crying at the end of the bed,

Afraid her sister may never recover, or be the same.

I’m the kid spending countless hours in the tiny room,

building blanket forts over the bed, or  playing games.

I’m the kid learning the cruelty of life in kindergarten,

More worried about my sister than my friends,

The hospital always seems to bring bad memories.

Yes, that was I.

Unknown

I’m the high schooler who still doesn’t know,

where my college will be or who I want to be.

I’ve had a crazy life already the future is scary,

change is never easy, but it is always needed.

The future is where I’m scared to go,

Yes, that will be me.

Author’s note

This is my second draft, I basically changed the whole thing last night. I like it, with my last stanza I couldn’t think of much more to talk about.
